South Carolina’s Lowcountry

Our destination from Wrightsville would be right in the heart of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. With a little research we find that this refers to a geographic and cultural region of South Carolina, along the coastal waters and includes the Sea Islands. Having traveled these waters for over six years, this year the term Lowcountry became even lower? We have never seen bridge boards so exposed out of the water. Most times as sailors we were hoping to get low water so we could pass under the bridge with a 62 foot mast. This trip would have been a piece of cake as at some of the fixed bridges we could see up to 70 foot clearance. Again this is quite a dilemma for us as with the low water on the Intra Coastal Waterway comes some pretty “skinny” or shallow spots.

We would dock at Bucksport Marina for the night as we made our 5:30 pm scheduled arrival. Such a great staff there. So friendly and eager to help you in any way they can. We would enjoy dinner and call it a night early as we were up at the crack of dawn for this 70 mile journey. That was the longest leg thus far. We are hoping to get the generator repaired and make up some time on the ocean after leaving Georgetown. We will have to wait and see on that.
